Attending Your First Tech Event: Advice From the Original #sfbeta Trio

Legendary startup event producers Krystyl Baldwin (Twestival, Social Media Prom) and Cass Phillipps (FailCon) join me for an extensive 35-minute conversation on attending your first tech event. Krystyl and Cass partnered with me on #sfbeta for a number of years — Cass as a co-producer, Krystyl running operations and social media — and continue to be friends and collaborators.

Whether in Silicon Valley or elsewhere, attending your first tech event can be a nerve-wracking endeavor, particularly for people who may not be naturally social, or who never had the chance to be part of a larger social group. With so many events to attend, and so many people to meet, how can you break into the scene without losing your mind?

Offering advice on everything from discovering happening events (hint: use Twitter) to finding a date (hint: don’t be creepy) to networking successfully (hint: listen more than you speak) — and sharing experiences from #sfbeta along with their own events — Cass and Krystyl shine light on what the startup community is like, how to become a part of it, and what to expect when you’re in a room full of people.
